From my earliest years, I wanted to be a pilot.  As a kid, I’d sit in a swing on our front porch, and watch the contrails of jets fly overhead, wishing I could be up there.  A defining moment for me was when my cousin (a flight attendant) flew into the KDSM airport in a Boeing 727.  I got the chance to sit in the Captain’s seat of that passenger jet, and marveled at all of the instruments, dials, and switches as the Captain tried to explain their function to me.  I was in heaven!

I had my first flying lesson when I was 18 years old, and never looked back!

The world of general aviation has changed significantly since the 1970’s when I began flying.

Today, you’ll find me flying a Luscombe 8A, Ercoupe 415-C, Taylorcraft BC-12D or an Experimental.  And of course, I still do aerobatics.

The reason I started this website and YouTube channel is to promote general aviation, and hopefully get more people to experience the joy of flight.

Get to know Matt, aka ThisOldPilot

It’s pretty simple.  I love to fly.  Always have, always will.  And I also love to encourage others to experience flight.
